What are the Clinical Applications of Radiosurgery?
Radiosurgery has several clinical applications and can treat a variety of neurological and other conditions.
Cancers of the CNS:
- Brain cancer
- Acoustic neuroma
- Pituitary gland tumors
- Spinal cord tumors
Other Cancers:
- Kidney
- Lung
- Liver
- Pancreas
- Breast
- Prostate
- Melanoma (a type of skin cancer) involving the eye
Other Medical Conditions:
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Arteriovenous malformation (AVM)
- Tremors/shaking
- Parkinson's disease
- Psychoneurosis e.g. obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Epilepsy
Who Should Undergo Radiosurgery?
Radiosurgery is recommended for patients under the following circumstances:
- Normal surgery is too risky, either due to age or other health problems.
- Operating area is located close to vital structures within the body.
- Tumor is too small to be removed by normal surgery.
- Tumor is located deep within the brain and is inaccessible and hard to reach.
