Glossary
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF): A clear colorless fluid that fills the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord.Meninges: The three membranes that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Lumbar puncture: A procedure in which a needle is put into the lower part of the spinal column to collect cerebrospinal fluid or to give anticancer drugs intrathecally. Also called a spinal tap.
Hydrocephalus: The abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain.
Edema: The accumulation of fluid in any part of the body.
