Medically Reviewed by Dr. Sunil Shroff, MBBS, MS, FRCS (UK), D. Urol (Lond) on Dec 15, 2020

How is Psychosis Diagnosed?

Psychosis is diagnosed through a psychiatric evaluation.

The psychiatrist will watch the person's behavior and ask questions about what they are experiencing in turn. Medical tests, X-rays may be used to determine an underlying illness causing the several symptoms.

Diagnosing Psychosis in Children as well as Teenagers

Most of the symptoms of psychosis in adults are not the inherent symptoms of psychosis in young people. For example, small children sometimes do have imaginary friends with whom they speak to. This represents an imaginative play, which is completely normal for children. But if you are worried about psychosis in a child or an adolescent, do describe their behavior to a doctor and discuss it.

Family Intervention

Family intervention is often referred to where the patient and family do work with mental health professionals to help the patient to manage their own relationships. This should be offered to the people who live together and have a close relationship.

The support that is received will depend on what the problem is the preferences the family accepts. This could be by way of group family sessions or even individual sessions.

Art Therapy

Art therapy may be way more useful if there are depressive symptoms, such as withdrawing from people or then losing interest in things that was previously enjoyable.

The art therapy sessions are held with an art therapist. It will usually be in a group. It is done to mix different communication techniques with creativity. Art therapy aims to help in learning new ways of relating to other people, showing how they are, what they feel accepting the feelings, and in turn understanding the feelings.

Therapy for Trauma

If a person has experienced trauma, then their psychosis may be well a part of their way of dealing with this. This is something that can be treated with counselling or even psychotherapy. The therapist will help the person to understand the root causes of their hallucinations or even delusions. They will explore ways to overcome and control all those difficult voices and beliefs.
