1. Which specialist do I consult for a hangover?

A hangover will usually resolve by itself. If it is severe you could consult a general physician.

2. Is a hangover caused by dehydration?

Alcohol has a diuretic effect leading to increased urine production. This causes an electrolyte imbalance which leads to increased thirst, dizziness, headache, nausea and other effects. However, dehydration is not the only cause for a hangover.

5. Can you take Tylenol for a hangover?

It is usually advised to avoid Tylenol as it can cause long term damage to the liver. When you have been drinking, your liver is already exposed to the stress of metabolizing alcohol. As a result, the normal metabolism of Tylenol in the liver is hampered. This can cause permanent damage to liver. It's best to consult your physician or stick to non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen.

6. Why do you get a hangover from drinking alcohol?

Earlier, it was thought that dehydration was the main cause for a hangover. As alcohol promotes urine production symptoms of thirst, dizziness and headache appear. However, other causes include acetaldehyde which is a by-product of metabolism of alcohol formed in the liver. This is more toxic than alcohol and has been found to play a role in hangover symptoms. Though the exact cause for a hangover is still unknown.
