Latent Autoimmune Diabetes (LADA) - Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Which doctor should I consult to rule out diabetes? You can consult a general physician or a diabetic specialist (diabetologist)
2. How common is LADA?
Depending on the population, nearly 10-25% of type 2 diabetes cases may actually represent LADA
3. Can Type 2 diabetes be autoimmune?
There is some suggestion that type 2 diabetes may be autoimmune but there is not enough evidence to support this theory. Thus, doctors will continue to treat type 2 diabetes with diet, and lifestyle modifications, medications, and insulin injections.
4. Why is it necessary to distinguish LADA from type 2 diabetes?
LADA testing may be a good idea in leaner, physically active adults who are more likely to have LADA and not type 2 diabetes. Such persons are also not overly insulin resistant (a feature of type 2 diabetes). Also insulin therapy may preserve beta cell function and LADA patients typically do not respond to lifestyle modifications and oral therapy.
