1. Is locked-in syndrome preventable?

Most of the causes of Locked-in Syndrome are irreversible and cannot be prevented. People at risk of stroke pose a higher risk.

People with Locked- In syndrome require dedicated supportive therapy. Death may occur secondary to infection, sepsis and complete respiratory failure.

3. What is Monte Cristo Syndrome?

It is another name for Locked "" In Syndrome. It refers to a character in Alexander Dumas' COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO. The character, M. Noirtier de Villefort, following an episode of apoplexy (unconciousness or hemorrhage due to stroke), was paralyzed except for the ability to move his eyelids which he used to communicate with his family.

4. What is the survival rate after being diagnosed with LiS?

Some people with locked-in syndrome succumb early in the disease due to medical complications. However, others live for another 10 to 20 years and report a good quality of life.
