Opportunistic infections not only attack the immunocompromised but are also are very severe and serious.


3. What are CD4 cells?

CD4 cells are lymphocytes, which are one type of white blood cells which help in warding off the infection. Consequently a low CD4 count will increase the risk of opportunistic infections.

4. What does HIV viral load mean?

Viral load means the number of HIV viral elements in one ml of blood.

5. Can opportunistic infections be fatal?


If the opportunistic infections are not promptly detected and treated, they can overwhelm the immune system causing severe infection and sometimes death. It is therefore important to be aware of warning signs of infection such as fever, feeling tired, body aches or generally feeling under the weather and seek prompt medical attention.
