Glossary
Olfactory: Pertaining to sense of smell.Nerve: A nerve is a bundle of fibers that uses electrical and chemical signals to transmit sensory and motor information from one body part to another.
Neuron: A nerve cell.
Anosmia: Absence of the sense of smell.
PET: Investigational imaging technique used for measuring blood flow and metabolism of internal body tissues, including the heart and brain. The technique traces emissions from an injected radioactive substance to generate images of activity at specific brain receptors.
MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging): A sophisticated test that provides in-depth images of organs and structures in the body.
CT scan: CT scan. A series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body, taken from different angles; the pictures are created by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. Also called computerized tomography and computerized axial tomography (CAT) scan.
EEG (electroencephalogram): EEG in short, it enables a picture of the electrical current in the brain. Electrodes placed on the scalp is connected to a machine that prints out the electrical impulses of the brain on a paper or a computer screen.
