1. Which doctor should I consult for PMR?If you exhibit signs and symptoms of PMR, first see your family physician who can make a clinical diagnosis, evaluate the severity of the condition and initiate treatment. If required he may ask you to consult a specialist called a Rheumatologist.
2. How can I prepare for the doctor's appointment?
Make sure you are aware about all the symptoms that you are experiencing (even those that might not seem to be important to you). You should make a list of medications that you might be taking, including any vitamins and nutritional supplements. You must also be ready with all personal health information, including any stressful conditions or recent life changing experiences.
3. How can I know that I am suffering from PMR?
If you are above 60 years and experience unexplained muscular or joint pain, stiffness and muscle cramps that is new, disturbs your sleep and prevents you from doing everyday tasks, you may be suffering from PMR.
4. How serious is PMR?
PMR is a debilitating disease but generally does not deteriorate like rheumatoid arthritis and generally not life-threatening. However, if you also have temporal arteritis or GCA, you will be at a higher risk for stroke, which is dangerous and can be life-threatening.
5. How long could I suffer from PMR?
PMR generally resolves following administration of corticosteroids. This treatment can last from 18 months to 2 years. However, in difficult cases, it may take up to 5 years to be fully cured.
