1. Which doctor should I consult for pyelonephritis?

Consult an urologist, if you are getting recurrent UTI or pyelonephritis. If urologist is not available you should consult a nephrologist for pyelonephritis.

2. Do you develop pyelonephritis in either kidneys or one kidney?

Pyelonephritis usually develops in one kidney, sometimes both kidneys become infected.

3. Who is more susceptible to get kidney infections?

Kidney infections are common in older people, children, women and in pregnancy. It is uncommon in young-middle aged men.


4. What is the prognosis of pyelonephritis?

If patients do not have any other significant medical problems, they usually make a full recovery.

5. How can you prevent Pyelonephritis?

Preventative treatment with antibiotics is given in women with at least three symptomatic infections in a year. The antibiotics are taken once a day at night. Trimethoprim or Nitrofurantoin is commonly used.
