What are the Risks and Complications of Laser Skin Resurfacing?

The following risk factors are associated with laser skin resurfacing:

• Smoking: Smoking must be stopped at least two weeks prior to the procedure as this can prolong healing. Smoking afterwards can increase the risk of side-effects.
• Medicines: Isotretinoin containing medicines can increase the risk of scar formation. Aspirin and ibuprofen can elevate the risk of bleeding post-laser treatment.

Common complications include swelling, scarring and prolonged redness. Other complications include the following:

• Bacterial infections: This may require antibiotics before and after laser therapy.
• Acne flare-up: This may be treated by immunosuppressants.
• Reactivation of cold sores & fever blisters: These can occur if laser resurfacing is done around the mouth, but can be prevented by taking antivirals before and after the procedure.
• Hyperpigmentation: This can occur on the laser treated skin and can be treated by bleaching.
• Milia: These are bumps that occur during healing and can be treated with a cotton swab soaked in cleansing lotion.
