RSV is deadly only in preterm infants with congenital heart disease, asthma or bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Most people recover from an RSV infection within one to two weeks.


4. Can RSV cause long term problems?

Children with RSV who required hospitalization may develop long term problems such as wheezing and childhood asthma.

5. Can babies pass RSV to adults?

Yes.

6. Does RSV cause permanent lung damage?

Most infections settle down without complications. Lung damage may rarely occur in very young babies with weak immunity and the elderly with coexisting chronic medical conditions.
