Community workouts, like at a gym, is a great way to meet new people, make friends, catch up on local gossip etc - everything that makes for a good and healthy social outlet. Experts also suggest that exercising for others proves useful - like cycling at a charity event. Team sports is good, especially for kids. But if you have to work out alone - try taking your spouse or best friend along. Besides being good company, (s)he will keep your motivation levels up.
