Zinc: For the Normal Growth
Zinc: For the Normal Growth
Zinc might not be required in large amounts, but is necessary to be present in our diet for the right functioning of the immune system, for synthesizing DNA, and wound healing. Zinc is also essential for the normal growth and sexual maturity of an individual.
The deficiency in zinc may cause stunted growth and slows down sexual maturity in girls and boys. In women zinc is very important during the pregnancy. With too little amount of zinc in the body, the sense of smell and sight might also get affected.
The food items, which are rich in zinc, are oysters, red meat, dried seeds of pumpkin, watermelon, and dark chocolates. Supplements containing zinc are also a good source of zinc.
The RDA of zinc is:
Age | Male | Female |
14-18 years | 11 milligrams | 11 milligrams |
19 years and above | 8 milligrams | 8 milligrams |
| | Pregnant and Lactating - 11-12 milligrams |
High intake of zinc can cause toxicity, weakens your immunity and may cause nausea, diarrhea, dizziness and hallucinations.
