Glossary
Abrasion: An area rubbed bare of skin or mucous membrane; or, the normal wearing of tooth enamel by chewing.Dental Caries: a destructive process causing decalcification of the tooth enamel and leading to continued destruction of enamel and dentine, and cavitation of the tooth.
Fluoride: Element found in nature that helps prevent tooth decay.
Gingivitis: Inflammation of the gums surrounding teeth. Signs of gingivitis are inflamed and bleeding gums.
Humectant: Moistens or dilutes.
Hygiene: The practice, maintenance, and study of health; commonly refers to cleanliness.
Hydrogen Peroxide: A chemical used in bleaches, dyes, cleansers, antiseptics, and disinfectants. In a concentrated form, it is toxic and irritating to tissues.
Oral surgeon: A dentist with special training in surgery of the mouth and jaw.
Pain: An unpleasant sensation that can range from mild localized discomfort to agony. Pain has both physical and emotional components.
Plaque: Thin layer of food debris and bacteria, which covers the tooth surface.
