Oesophageal atresia / Tracheo oesophageal fistula (TOF)
What complications are likely after the operation?
Oesophageal Leak: This usually presents early, always before discharge, and will in the majority of occasions close itself. It may cause the baby to become distressed on breathing and cough and splutter when fed.Recurrence of TOF: This usually occurs in the first 2 months following surgery and is rare. It is a major complication requiring further surgery. The signs to look for are coughing and even gagging when feeding. More acutely the baby may stop breathing and become quite blue in colour or pale, cold and mottled. Your baby may also go through episodes of frequent chest infections that do not seem to abate.
