Craniofacial Anomalies

Craniofacial anomalies and deformities involve mainly the face and the skull. They are either present at birth, or developed lateral due to birth defect or following trauma, accident and tumours of face and skull. Some of the commonest craniofacial anomalies are craniofacial clefts, which involve the soft tissue, bones of face and skull. Some of these clefts involve eyelids and ears. These anomalies need soft tissue correction in early childhood and correction of bony defect at later date.

Craniosynostosis is another common anomaly, which includes the skull bone. There is defect in the growth of the one or more skull bones leading to deformation of the skull, which also affect the shape of face. Occasionally these deformities lead to increase in tension in fluid spaces of brain and may affect the growth of the brain. It can also damage the vision. Many children form more complex deformities and part of syndrome. They all need multidisciplinary management and complex surgeries.
