Buruli Ulcer - Glossary

Glossary

Necrosis: Death of cell or tissue in the body. Death can be due to lack of blood flow, infection, injury etc.

Endemic: Native to certain region or limited to certain region.

Granulation: Grainy appearance of the skin after healing of major wounds.

Contracture: Permanent shortening of a muscle or joint, usually as a result of scarring of tissue.


Debridment: Removal of dead and damaged tissues to enhance the healing of the healthy tissues around it.

Rehabilitation: Re-integration of a person into the society after he has suffered from a debilitating disease and has undergone treatment for the same. This can involve various procedures like physical therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, etc.
