Complications of Multiple Pregnancy

Complications associated with multiple pregnancy include pre-term labor, anemia, eclampsia, gestational hypertension and diabetes, congenital abnormalities, miscarriage, twin-to-twin syndrome etc.

Multiple pregnancy involves a good number of risks that can affect both the mother as well as the babies. Complications that can pose during the multiple pregnancy include:

Risks associated with mother:

• Anemia

• Gestational hypertension or preeclampsia (high blood pressure with protein in urine increasing risk of heart and kidney problems)
• Gestational diabetes
• Backache, tiredness, ankle swelling, heartburn

• Miscarriage
• Delivery by caesarian section.
• Excessive ante-partum and post-partum bleeding
• Early labor
• Postpartum depression

Risks associated with babies:

• Low birth weight and poor fetal growth

• Premature birth
• Chances of congenital anomalies
• Risk of congenital infections
• Risk of cerebral palsy

• Vanishing twin syndrome is commonly seen in case of triplets or quadruplets where one of the fetuses disappears.
• Twin-to-twin syndrome (TTTS) is observed in identical twins sharing placenta in which the blood from one fetus is diverted to the other.
