Diagnosis of Osteomyelitis
Investigations
1. Blood tests show
- An increase in the white cell count.
- The CRP (C Reactive Protein) is raised..
- ESR(Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) maybe high.
2. Ultrasonography will identify collections of pus.
3. Plain X-ray changes are not visible for some time.
4. Isotope scans are sensitive, not specific.
5. CT scans may show bone erosion and collections.
6. MRI is the investigation of choice, showing oedema in the marrow and collections of pus.
7. Microbiology and culture studies from the bone, not the sinus tract.
8. Careful histological interpretation of the tissue.
