Allergic Lid Edema

The most common cause of eyelid swelling is allergy, it is of two types:

• Local allergy (contact sensitivity)
• Systemic allergy (angioedema)

Local allergy results in itchy, painless, puffy eyelids. There may be lid skin excoriation also. There is usually a history of recurrence with exposure to allergen. It may involve one or both the eyes.

Eye lid swelling due to systemic allergy results in Itching, bilateral puffy eyelids along with extraocular allergic manifestations like urticaria, wheezing and rhinorrhea(11^✔).

There may be history of recurrence and atopic tendency.
