1. Which doctor should I consult for Alzheimer's disease?

A geriatrician should be consulted for Alzheimer's disease.

2. My father has Alzheimer's disease, will I get it?

There is a very low risk of inheriting the same mutated allele and for inheriting the disease. If it does get inherited, it is the Early Onset Alzheimer's Disease (EOAD) that develops.

3. Is there a cure for the disease?

No known cure exists for the disease till now, however, there are numerous promising research that could provide a cure in the near future.


4. When there is no cure for the disease, how will genetic analysis help?

Genetic analysis will help understand the risk and thereby, provide a better understanding of the symptoms of the disease. It will also help in preparing for the disease, both among patients as well as the caregivers.


5. Can Alzheimer's disease be prevented?

The genes that increase the risk of the disease do not necessarily lead to the disease. There are environmental triggers too that work along with the genes to initiate the disease condition. Since the exact triggers are unknown, it is difficult to prevent the disease. However, it has been found that an active life, healthy diet and keeping mental faculties exercised will delay the onset of the disease.

6. What is Familial Alzheimer's disease (FAD)?

FAD is a rare form of Alzheimer's disease that is passed down the family. It is inherited from a parent and accounts for 2-3% of all Alzheimer's disease, with symptoms developing in their 30s or 40s.
