Treatment and Complications

Treatment of Goodpasture syndrome involves removal of antibodies from the plasma, maintaining proper lung and kidney function, and preventing complications and the formation of new antibodies.

Treatment of Goodpasture syndrome includes the following:

• Blood transfusion may be required to counter the blood loss.
• The airways should be maintained to allow adequate supply of oxygen
• Plasmapheresis may be done to decrease the number of circulating antibodies. It is a procedure in which excess antibodies are removed from the blood.
• Steroids may be used to decrease coughing up of blood.
• Blood pressure should be controlled with medications to delay kidney damage.
• Kidney disease is treated with drugs that suppress immunity like cyclophosphamide and corticosteroids.
• In patients with severe kidney disease, long-term hemodialysis or kidney transplantation may be required.

Survival of patients with Goodpasture syndrome has improved due to available treatments. People with severe kidney disease have a poor prognosis.

Complications of Goodpasture syndrome include:

• Uncontrolled bleeding
• Lung failure
• Kidney failure
• Fluid excess or loss
• Death
