How can Marfan Syndrome be Treated?
Treatment of Marfan syndrome is preferably done by a specialized team of specialists.
Yearly check up with a team of specialized doctors helps to increase the life expectancy of patients affected by Marfan syndrome. Steps necessary to treat Marfan syndrome and prevent complications include:
Early and periodic eye checkup with an eye specialist helps correct problems related to vision. Dislocation of the lens could be corrected with the help of lenses; surgery may be opted in certain cases.
Skeletal problems affecting the spine may be treated with bracing or surgery. Chest deformities may also require surgery.
Heart problems should be identified and checked by conducting various heart tests and echocardiograms. -adrenergic blockers and ACE inhibitors are among the medications recommended to treat heart-related complications. The diameter of the aorta should be regularly measured and surgery is recommended when the diameter reaches 5 cm.
Pregnant woman with Marfan syndrome should be counseled to discuss the 50% impact of Marfan syndrome on the offspring. The chances of aortic rupture also increase during pregnancy.
Patients affected by Marfan syndrome should be motivated to engage themselves in moderate aerobic activities, which help promote bone, heart and the overall health. However, the patient should also be advised not to take part in contact sports and competitive athletics due to a risk for rupture of the aorta.
