How can we Diagnose Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

The diagnosis of UTI is based on a detailed history of the symptoms given by the patient and diagnostic tests.

• A urinalysis, to look for the presence of bacteria and 'pus' cells in the urine can be helpful in diagnosing UTI.
• An ultrasound examination/CT scan/ MRI of the kidney and bladder maybe necessary in some patients to reveal urinary abnormalities and measure how well the kidneys work.
• A dip stick test is also available and it can give diagnosis within a short period.

• Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) is another test that may be performed. It involves instilling a chemical into the bladder and taking serial X-rays as the patient urinates. This test is usually undertaken if the UTI keeps occurring repeatedly in children.
• If the above tests are positive a urine culture can reveal the infection and type of bacteria causing the infection.(6^✔)
