About Apples and Pears
An apple-shaped individual is more prone to developing the metabolic syndrome while a pear shaped person is relatively safer
People whose bodies are larger at the top and smaller below are referred to as apple-shaped. A man or a woman with this body shape has a waist circumference of 40 inches or more and 35 inches or more respectively.
There is more fat deposition on the upper torso and abdominal area. Although there are women who are apple-shaped, this body type is predominant among men.
An apple-shaped individual has a higher chance of developing the metabolic syndrome. It is a group of medical conditions that increases an individual's risk of developing diabetes and coronary heart disease.
A pear-shaped body on the other hand, is larger at the bottom than on top. Hips, thighs and buttocks tend to be large. This shape is commonly seen in women. While the pears are not predisposed to develop heart problems or diabetes, they find it a harder task to shed weight from the lower parts of the body. It is believed that estrogen has a role to play in storing fat in the lower regions.
