Diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
A specific test for IBS is not available. Diagnostic test are performed to rule out causes other than IBS. A proper medical history of the patient is taken; this is followed by a physical examination.
- Examination of blood and stool
- Imaging modalities like

Sigmoidoscopy
& colonoscopy especially in over 50 years age group to rule out cancerous lesions - X-ray studies - of the abdomen are performed. - a double-contrast barium enema
- Thyroid function test
- Psychiatric evaluation may be required at times
- Gynaecologic examination
