Third Stage of Labor
What happens during the third stage of labor?The placenta separates from the uterus and is removed by gently pulling by the cord. The uterus generally contracts and the upper end of the uterus rises above the umbilicus. If the doctor feels that any bits of placenta are retained, they are removed by introducing the hand into the uterus and removing the bits and pieces. The external genitalia is cleaned and an antiseptic pad is applied to the vagina and the patient is watched carefully for any excessive bleeding.
The position of the uterus is determined, pulse rate is noted and the amount of bleeding from the vagina is checked for.
