Treatment of Mitral Valve Stenosis

Mitral valve can be either replaced or repaired in patients with moderate to severe valve stenosis.


Repair can be done during cardiac catheterization. A balloon catheter is placed at the mitral valve site and quickly inflated. This causes the valve to stretch and separate. Blood flow through the valve is thus increased. This procedure is called as "Balloon valvotomy".

In case of severe Mitral stenosis where balloon valvotomy cannot be performed, mitral valve can be repaired using an open heart procedure called "Open Commissurotomy". Scar tissues and calcium deposits in and around the valve is removed by the surgeon.

Mitral valve replacement is replacing the diseased mitral valve with an artificial valve. This procedure is opted when the valve is damaged beyond repair.

85% mortality has been documented in patients with about twenty years of symptomatic mitral valve stenosis and no surgical treatment.

Isolated congenital mitral stenosis has good short and long-term results after surgery.
