In some cases, more than one factor may be responsible for causing the birth defect.
For example genes form both parents may interact with one another to produce an undesirable effect in the presence of a specific environmental factor. The exact cause for these birth defects is difficult to identify because of the associated complexity. Further research is indicated in this specific area to improve our currently existing knowledge about multifactorial birth defects.
