Symptoms and Signs of Peritoneal Cancer

Symptoms of peritoneal cancers are often vague and include:

• Pain in abdomen
• Distention of abdomen - due to accumulation of excess fluid within the peritoneal cavity, a condition called ascitis.
• Nausea, vomiting, constipation
• Feeling of a mass
• Weight loss
• Loss of appetite
• Symptoms of intestinal obstruction such as cramps, nausea, vomiting and constipation

Specific symptoms and signs of some of the types of peritoneal cancers include:

• Patients of Peritoneal Malignant Mesothelioma may show an increase in the number of platelets and clotting abnormalities on laboratory testing
• Patients with Cystic Mesothelioma may experience urinary urgency and pain during intercourse since the tumor is located lower down in the pelvis
• Patients with Desmoplastic small round cell tumor may experience difficulty in swallowing, jaundice, vomiting of blood and passing blood in urine.
