2. Can pesticides kill humans, what is the meaning of acute toxicity?
Pesticides can cause serious harm to human beings and in some cases even death. Acute toxicity is the term used for single or repeated exposure to pesticides in a short span of time. This can be due to an accident by simple mixing or application of pesticides. Pesticides having high acute toxicity can be dangerous, even if a small amount is absorbed.
3. What are the types of pesticide poisoning?
Pesticide poisoning is of three types:
- First: Single and short term having high exposure level, experienced by people who commit suicide and also those who make pesticides
- Second: Long term high-level exposure, involving people who manufacture pesticides and who formulate them.
- Third: Long term low exposure level, where people are exposed to from residues in food, air, water, soil, plants, animals and food materials.
4. What is chronic poisoning?
This occurs when an individual is exposed to small amount of pesticide repeatedly over an extended period. For example, if the pesticide is used improperly, like not wearing protective clothing and equipment or wearing stained or worn out clothing like cracked or torn gloves.
5. What is the importance of personal hygiene when dealing with pesticides?
It is very important. Before venturing into anything such eating, drinking, smoking or going to toilet, you must wash off your hands and face first. While working with pesticides, avoid contact with the face or other bare skin with dirty hands or gloves.
6. How do weather conditions affect the use of pesticide?
Pesticides should not be loaded or mixed under all weather conditions i.e. if weather conditions do not allow pesticide application, like blowing of heavy wind. In such circumstances mixing and loading of pesticides should be avoided.
