Pleural Effusion - FAQs

1) What is the prognosis of pleural effusion?

Pleural effusion is basically a symptom of an underlying disease. Hence its outcome depends on the severity of the actual case. Malignant effusions may have grave prognoses.

2) Can pleural effusion be prevented?

Preventing and treating the underlying cause on time will lessen the likelihood of developing an effusion.

3) When should I seek medical care for pleural effusion?

Symptoms like shortness of breath and chest pain warrant a consultation with your doctor.

4) Can pleural effusion recur even after complete treatment?

Yes. If the basic pathology that caused the effusion persists or a new risk factor walks in, effusion can recur.

5) Can recurrent cases of effusion be managed well?

Sclerosing agents like talc or tetracycline are used in recurrent cases. Surgery may be required if these agents fail.
