Complications of Polio Symptoms
Individuals with severe polio symptoms experience complications that affect the heart, lungs and the urinary system. They include:
- Inflammation of the heart muscle (Myocarditis)
- High blood pressure (Hypertension)
- Fluid in the lungs (Pulmonary edema)
- Pneumonia
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
Poliomyelitis mortality in children is about 2 to 5% and in adults it is 15 to 30%.
