Poliomyelitis - Nonparalytic
Nonparalytic poliomyelitis
Also known as Aseptic Meningitis, this form of poliomyelitis is observed in about 1 to 2% of individuals infected with the poliovirus. It is a more severe form of the disease that develops approximately 7 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. The early symptoms can be similar to minor polio symptoms but in addition, these may also occur:
- Stiffness in the neck, back and legs
- Muscle pain
- Muscle spasms
- Abnormal skin sensation
These symptoms improve rapidly, usually within 2 to 10 days, with complete recovery.
