Postpartum Psychosis - Frequently Asked Questions

Medically Reviewed by The Medindia Medical Review Team on Feb 12, 2022

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can postpartum psychosis occur after miscarriage or after adoption?

Yes. Postpartum psychosis can occur, although extremely rare, even after miscarriage or after adoption.

2. Should a mother suffering from postpartum psychosis quit breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding can add to the stress of a mother and she could be feeding her baby solely because of the pressure to feed expressed by family and friends. This could be detrimental to the mother's health and could complicate issues further. On the other hand, breast feeding could be the sole source of solace for the mother and aid in effective mother-child bonding. The onus of breastfeeding, therefore, should rest with the mother and she should be free to breastfeed or bottle feed the baby as she pleases, as long as the baby gets the right nutritional care.
