Premenstrual Syndrome - Causes
Causes
The cause of premenstrual syndrome is still shrouded in mystery as there is no single reason which can be attributed to the condition. Yet, scientists believe the triggers could lie with the changes in the levels of hormones, as well as deficit of certain important chemicals in the brain, during the onset of the menstrual cycle.
Primarily, fluctuating levels of the hormones, estrogen and progesterone during the menstruation cycle is thought to be a significant cause of premenstrual syndrome.
Chemical changes also take place in the brain during the menstrual cycle. For instance, levels of serotonin in the brain can rise and fall during the menstrual cycle.
Since serotonin is a mood regulator, fall in serotonin levels can make women vulnerable to some of the psychological symptoms of PMS.
