Primary Amenorrhea - Treatment

Medically Reviewed by Dr. Sunil Shroff, MBBS, MS, FRCS (UK), D. Urol (Lond) on Apr 03, 2008

Treatment

Primary Amennorhea may or may not be treatable depending on the causes.

Primary Amenorrhea may often not be treatable but the underlying reasons needs to be investigated and treatment offered wherever possible. It is imperative that treatment is carried out in accordance to the causes.

Weight loss or easing on excessive dieting could induce the onset of menstruation in some. In the case of hormonal imbalance, a dose of progesterone or estrogen for two weeks for a couple of months could rectify the problem. If a pituitary tumor is the cause of Primary Amenorrhea, then it is tackled by giving bromocriptine to control prolactin secretions and a surgery is carried out if possible.

If cytogenetic factors are responsible for the condition, as in the case of Turner's syndrome, the disease cannot be treated.
