1. Which doctors treat acute (or adult) respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)?ARDS is a critical condition that is treated in an intensive care unit under doctors trained in critical care as well as pulmonologists. A neonatologist or a pediatrician treats ARDS in children.
2. Is treatment with surfactant useful in ARDS?
Surfactant treatment has been useful in Respiratory Distress Syndrome of the Newborn. However, its usefulness in ARDS has not been established.
3. Can corticosteroids be used in ARDS?
Corticosteroids have not been found to be useful in ARDS and have resulted in complications in some cases.
4. Is putting the patient in prone position during ventilation useful?
Putting the patient in prone or face down position may help to improve the delivery of oxygen during ventilation. However, studies have failed to prove that it improves the survival in these patients.
