Risk Factors for Transient Ischemic Attack

Risk factors for transient ischemic attack include those that can be altered with changes in diet, exercise and medication and those that cannot be helped like heredity, age and gender.

The risk factors for transient Ischemic attack are the same as those associated with a stroke and include -

Non Modifiable Risk Factors -

• Age
• Gender
• Heredity
• Previous event of stroke or heart attack

• High fibrinogen levels in the blood (fibrinogen plays an important role in clotting of blood)

Modifiable Risk Factors -

• High blood pressure
• Heart disease
• Diabetes

• Smoking
• High cholesterol levels
• Asymptomatic carotid stenosis
• Use of oral contraceptives
• Social deprivation
• Excess alcohol consumption
