The exact cause of Sarcoidosis continues to evade the scientific world. Therefore it is difficult to cure or prevent the disorder.

Nevertheless, it is possible for these patients to manage the disease and live normal lives. In the majority of them, the disease is mild and remitting; treatment aimed at controlling symptoms is highly effective in them. However, in 20-25% of patients, the disease takes a severe turn, often resulting in complications, some of which cannot be effectively treated. Fatality could result in a small percentage of patients suffering from severe complications.

Some preventive measures that may help-

• Avoid Smoking
• Avoid excessive exposure to dust/chemicals
• Do regular medical check ups

Many patients experience 'loneliness' because they suffer from a little- known disease, of the kind that puzzles even the medical fraternity. Several of them suffer from depression, especially if the manifestations of the disease are unsightly or unremitting.

Patients with Sarcoidosis must reach out to support groups and others in similar conditions. This will help them to understand their disease better and also to interact with empathetic individuals.

The scientific world is doing its best to understand the disease and develop better techniques for diagnosis and treatment.
