Skin Disease/ Dermatology - Rare Skin Diseases
Rare skin diseases
As the name suggests, the incidence of these diseases are very rare among the general population. Some of these diseases are genetic in origin, while the etiology of the others remains unknown.
Some of the rare skin diseases are mentioned below -
- Recessive Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa (RDEB) occurs in 10 out of everyone million people and is a very rare disease. The individuals with this disease fail to produce a single
protein
required to build collagen that holds skin together. The slightest touch, scrape or bump results in blisters and sloughing off of the skin. The lining of the mouth, esophagus and intestinal tract are also affected. - Harlequin Ichthyosis - Another rare genetic skin disorder, in which the skin appears as thick as a coat of armor and tends to shed off 7-10 times faster than in normal individuals. The skin is covered with thick scales, which crack, giving it a fish-like appearance. There are hairs on these scales too.
- Morgellons disease - This is a strange disease reported recently in the US and some other places. It is characterized by an itchy, creepy-crawly sensation, skin sores, fatigue, visual disturbances, memory loss and an inability to concentrate. More news regarding the disease is awaited.
