1. Which doctor should I consult if I am suffering from problems related to sleep?

You can consult a general physician or an internist or a family physician or a sleep specialist.

2. What is the procedure adopted to diagnose a sleep disorder?

A complete history will be taken after which you will be examined. You will be required to maintain a sleep diary, and if need be, asked to take a test called polysomnogram.


3. How will I know if I am suffering from a sleep disorder?

You may evaluate yourself using the Epworth sleepiness scale or alternatively by maintaining a sleep dairy.

4. What are the various sleep disorders?

Insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless-leg syndrome, periodic leg movement disorder, circadian rhythm disorders, pediatric-related sleep disorders, etc.

5. How are sleep disorders treated?

Depending on the condition, behavioral therapy, CPAP, sedatives or stimulants form the mode of therapy.
