Putting the baby to sleep on the back, avoiding pillows and using a firm bedding are some of the strategies in preventing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Unfortunately, there is no 100% foolproof way to prevent SIDS, but there are steps that can be taken to reduce an infant's risk of SIDS.

• "Back to Sleep": A baby should be laid down to sleep on its back, and never on its stomach.
• If the infant has GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disorder)consult a pediatrician on an appropriate sleeping position.
• The baby should not be laid on a soft bed cribbing. A firm mattress that fits tightly into the crib is advised.
• Avoid pillows, comforters and plush toys. Never put the child to sleep on a pillow or other soft surface.
• Don't let the bedroom get too warm. Warm temperatures can cause deep sleep, which may make it harder for the baby to wake up.
• Do not smoke during pregnancy, and keep the baby away from secondhand smoke.
• Lastly, breastfeeding is thought to be protective against SIDS.
