Medically Reviewed by The Medindia Medical Review Team on May 14, 2020

The Eyed Fruit : Pineapple

The characteristics of pineapple are its numerous eyes, which at times are tedious to remove. So calling it an eyed fruit would not be misleading!

History

Mention of the fruit during the pre-Inca times suggests that it is native to Central and South America. Thereafter it travelled to Spain making its way to the tables of French aristocracy. By and by it made a place around the world. Today Hawaii is the largest producer of pineapples. It was named pineapple due to its resemblance to a pinecone.

From the botanical perspective

Pineapple is a multiple accessory fruit; it develops from many small berries fusing together. The botanical nomenclature of this wonderful fruit is quite similar to its Hindi name: Ananas comosus.
