Complications:

Autonomic involvement can cause cardiovascular complications such as hypertension. In severe cases the spasms increase in frequency and occur spontaneously and also by stimuli for 1 week and then the patient may die of exhaustion, asphyxia, or aspiration pneumonia. Tetanus also affects animals like horse and causes similar symptoms.


Prevention:

In the event of injury, the wound must be thoroughly cleaned after injury.

For those who are already protected by Tetanus toxoid a booster dose is given, if required. For those who are at the risk of tetanus, an Anti tetanus toxoid should be given and be followed up with a booster dose after 1 and 6 months.
