Tourette Syndrome - Symptoms
What are the Symptoms of Tourette Syndrome?
Tics are the main symptoms of Tourette Syndrome. The symptoms are simple or complex depending on the number of muscles involved(4✔).
Symptoms usually begin to occur in the head and neck area and may later on progress to the muscles of the trunk and other extremities.
Tics may be either simple or complex.
Simple motor tics involve fewer muscles, are repetitive movements that are sudden but brief such as:
- Repetitive blinking of eye
- Other irregularities involving vision Facial grimacing
- Head/shoulder jerking
- Shrugging of shoulders
- Simple vocalizations such as repetitive sniffing, throat clearing, snorting, barking or other grunting noises.
Complex tics involve larger muscle groups and have a distinct pattern of coordinated movement such as:
- Facial grimacing in combination with a head twist and a shoulder shrug.
- Sniffing or touching objects,
- Hopping,
- Bending,
- Jumping Or Twisting(4✔).
Complex vocal tics include the use of words or phrases including coprolalia (muttering swear words) or echolalia (repeating words or phrases used by others).
Some complex tics can cause self harm such as punching oneself in the face.
Tics may diminish after a sound sleep but they do not totally go away.
