Uterine Cancer - Diagnosis
Uterine Cancer Diagnosis
A woman with the aforesaid symptoms under goes a pelvic exam wherein an instrument known as the speculum is inserted, by the doctor, into her vagina to look for lumps or any changes in size or shape inside the vagina and the cervix. The doctor might also request for a blood and urine test to be carried out to look for cancer markers.
PAP smear test: (The Papanicolau test or cervical smear, or smear test) is a screening test used in gynecology to detect premalignant and malignanant condtions such as cancers of cervix and uterus. In this test the cells from the upper vagina and cervix are scraped out and checked for abnormal cells. This test is often not sensitive enough to detect abnormal changes inside the uterus, therefore a biopsy needs to be done.
Trans- vaginal ultrasound: Here an ultrasound probe is inserted into the vagina and high-frequency sound waves are focused at the uterus. If an abnormal pattern emerges, then an endometrial biopsy would be carried out to evaluate the abnormality.
Biopsy: During a biopsy a sample of the endometrial tissue is siphoned out and sent to be examined by a pathologist. In some cases a Dilatation and Curettage (D&C) needs to be carried out before a biopsy, and for this procedure anesthesia has to be administered. Both these procedures can be carried out on the same day. Cramps or bleeding is common in some women after a biopsy.
Some of the other tests that may be carried out include X-rays, CT scans and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).
