Vitamin C / Ascorbic acid - Deficiency Aftermath!

Deficiency of Vitamin C leads to scurvy. Symptoms arise due to weakening of collagen in the bones, tissues and blood vessels. This incapacitates the body's capacity to heal naturally.. This also triggers loss of hair and tooth, swelling of joints, bleeding gums and tiredness.

The diagnosis of scurvy was first made in sailors as they were found to suffer from the above symptoms, while sailing. However, when their diet was supplemented with oranges and lemons, the condition improved.

Scurvy is uncommon in the developed nations, as fruits and vegetables that form part of normal household diet, contains sufficient quantities of Vitamin C. This is not the case in third world countries where scurvy still exists.
