2. What is the difference between ileostomy and colostomy procedure?
In colostomy, the colon or large intestine is brought out to the exterior, while in ileostomy, the ileum is brought out. The initial stool in colostomy is liquid but it hardens in due course, especially if a significant length of large intestine is left behind. The stool from an ileostomy is usually liquid.
3. Can ileostomy be done with a laparoscope?
Yes, the ileostomy procedure can also be done with a laparoscope.
4. What is a good ileostomy diet?
It is best to maintain a food diary to know what cause bad odor or gaseous so you can keep a record of the food that you have eaten and how it affects your bowel movement. It normally takes about 2 months for the bowels to settle down after ileostomy.
Certain foods will give more odor and are best avoided. These include onions, garlic, broccoli, asparagus, cabbage, fish, eggs, baked beans, Brussels sprouts, certain types of cheeses and alcohol.
5. Are there foods that can keep the odor down?
Yes you should include parsley, yogurt, and buttermilk in your diet to prevent odor.
6. How can I control gas coming from the Ileostomy?
Eat slowly, eat small meals at regular intervals five to six times a day.
Avoid swallowing air, hence don't drink through a straw. When you drink tea or coffee take small sips. Avoid soda and fizzy drinks.
Avoid food items such as cucumbers, radishes, or melons.
7. My stools are reddish does it mean I maybe bleeding through the ileostomy?
If you have had the following food, you may think you are bleeding:
- Tomato juice,
- Cherry-flavored drinks or food,
- Red peppers,
- Beetroot
